Payam has published in English, French and Russian for popular culture periodicals and academic reviews alike, including The New York Times, Libération, Art Review, Black Square, and Purple. Living between four countries–the US, Iran, France, and Russia–three of which have historically antagonistic relations, Payam seeks out meaning in unexpected places: his essays have covered such diverse phenomena as the monobrow, Islamic modernity and the “naughty noughties” in Russia.
He has been a contributing editor to 032c magazine, a leading European culture bi-annual, since 2007, and is currently working on his first book, a collection of essays entitled I Still See Communism Everywhere.
